Veg Momo without Steamer
Momos are also known as Dimsum and are very popular street food in northern parts of India. Momos are dumplings made with all-purpose flour or
whole wheat flour and savory stuffing. This stuffing can be made with
vegetables, cottage cheese (paneer), chicken, or seafood. You can also make the
outer layer with whole wheat flour for a healthier option. Momo can be deep-fried, pan-fried, baked, or steamed. Today I’m going to steam them because many
of us do not have a steamer at home and sometimes we crave these delicious
foods and can’t go out because of many reasons. So here is the easiest steamed
vegetable momo recipe without the use of a steamer.
INGREDIENTS:
FOR DOUGH:
- All-purpose flour (maida)- 2 cups
- Salt- ½ tsp
- Baking powder- ½ tsp
FOR FILLING:
- Carrot (grated) - 1 cup
- Cabbage (grated) - 1 cup
- Onion (finely chopped) – ½ cup
- Garlic (finely chopped) – 1 tsp
- Soya sauce – 1 tsp
- Salt – 1 tsp or as required
- Vinegar – ½ tsp
- Black pepper – ¼ tsp
- Oil - 1 tbsp
PREPARATION:
FOR THE STUFFING:
- Heat some oil in a pan and add chopped onion and garlic. Set the flame on high and add the carrot and cabbage. Sauté on high flame till it turns glossy.
- Turn off the flame and add vinegar, soya sauce, black pepper, and salt. Mix well and set aside.
FOR THE DOUGH MAKING:
- Add maida, baking powder, and salt in a bowl and start kneading a stiff dough gradually adding water.
- Cover the bowl with a cling wrap or a cotton cloth to keep it soft and set aside.
HOW TO SHAPE MOMO:
- Divide the dough into a few strips and cut those strips into small portions. Make small lemon-sized balls and dust them with some dry flour.
- Start rolling them into a thin round disk shape. Wet the edges and put a spoonful of prepared vegetable stuffing in the center.
- Bring edges together to cover the filling properly. Twist to seal and prepare the rest of the momo in the same way.
PROCESS:
HOW TO STEAM MOMO WITHOUT STEAMER:
- Take a deep pan or a kadhai, fill it with 1 cup of water, and place a wire stand inside it.
- Cover the kadhai and boil the water for 5 minutes on low flame.
- Now take a steel bowl or heatproof utensils smaller than the kadhai or pan so that it can be easily placed inside the kadhai.
- Grease the steel bowl/heatproof utensil with 2 tsp vegetable oil to avoid sticking the momo to the pan.
- Arrange the momo and give enough space between every momo.
- When the water will start boiling, put the momo-filled bowl/utensil on the wire stand inside the kadhai. Tightly cover the kadhai.
- Let the momo steam on low flame for about 15-20 minutes. After 15-20 minutes, carefully check the momo and remove them from the kadhai.
- Serve it with hot and spicy chili garlic chutney.
